Harbor Light's newest member,
Chicago native George McDonald, is not only a talented vocalist
but also an accomplished percussionist. He came into this world
with an infernal racket, drumsticks in hand, and was playing
drums by age 9. By the age of 12, he had already started honing
his vocal skills by singing along with his favorite bands on
the radio. Singing drummers were a rare commodity and by his
teens, George was a highly sought after musician.
"I was hooked and this
obsession chose me, not the other way around. I just instinctively
knew that this was what I was going to do for the rest of my
life."
Listening and practicing to
a wide variety of music styles, George was able to perform and
sing everything from jazz to rock. This afforded him the opportunity
to work with numerous talented bands throughout the Midwest.
One such band was Temper-Temper, an all original power trio who
had much success throughout the Chicago club scene. That was
followed by another all original band, Something Big, whose positive
lyrics and Christian influences caught the attention of rock
legend Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad fame who co-produced
their first recording project.
Having limited success trying
to break into the struggling Christian music market, Something
Big reformed and changed their name to Ground Rush when their
demo CD found its way into the hands of Roger Nelson, owner of
Skydive Chicago. Roger loved what he heard and contracted the
band to write a concept album comprised of various music styles
for a skydiving project he was working on. This also included
a video soundtrack as well. That CD, along with the video, was
marketed and distributed world wide and put George and his band
on the map as international recording artists.
George's most current band
mates are those who make up the incredible a cappella, doo-wop
singing group Harbor Lights. "I never dreamed in a million
years that I woud have the opportunity to sing with such a tented
group of vocalists," George commented. "You know life
is good. It's full of surprises that
I never would have thought possible. I enjoy waking up wondering
what each day is going to bring.:
